December 11th – RBL Club Christmas Match, Bitterwell Lake, Coalpit Heath (Cancelled)

Last Year’s Christmas match should have been held at Farleigh Wood but thanks to the “Hillbilly” owners, it ended up being double booked and so we had to postpone our match until January, when we could hold it on Bitterwell lake. Needless to say, we were a little apprehensive as this match approached so we contacted the fishery manager several times to ensure it was still on. We had also booked the nearby Folly pub for a meal afterward but I just had to call in and check that they had a record of the booking. It’s just as well I did, as they had since changed their booking system and there was no sign of our reservation for 14 guests. Phew! All sorted just in time. Now the only thing that would be against us would be the freezing weather.

Well, that and yet another Christmas tale of the unexpected. Bitterwell Lake, like everywhere at the moment, is frozen over and although ice-breakers have been put to good use on many waters up and down the country, the Bitterwell Lake Fishery Manager decided he would cancel our match. Reason: The lake is frozen and some tench were put in recently and he was worried they might get stressed. What??? Just 2 days later he was breaking the ice himself to run one of his regular Tuesday matches and some tench were caught too!!!

So that left us with just a few days to find an alternative venue, which we did (thanks to Boyd Valley Lake), only to find a blanket of snow, which made it awkward for our members in the Chippenham area to get to the draw in time. It also meant that access to Boyd Lake would be precarious and the platforms could be somewhat dangerous. So, once again we faced another cancellation. It was beginning to look like a no-fishing match Christmas for all of us. I must remember to leave Santa a note next year.
