September 25th – RBL Club Match, Bridgwater & Taunton Canal

This club match on the canal at Charlton Orchard was attended by just 8 Legionnaires, which was a bit disappointing for such a nice venue. Anyway, everyone arrived in time and after a bit of a kerfuffle about parking in the field, we managed to get the draw underway. Dan Baldwin from Taunton Angling kindly pegged it out for us the day before so all we had to do was go to our pegs and fish. The Bridgwater & Taunton canal holds a good head of tench, some big perch, bream and the odd carp plus loads of roach, rudd and skimmers. You never know what you’re going to catch off any of the pegs, which adds to the excitement.

I drew peg 4, which wasn’t as wide as the pegs on the higher numbers but I had a job to do regardless. Plumbing up, I had about 4 feet of water down the track but lots of weed on the bottom. Right over at 11 metres I had 3 feet of water with a nice clear patch up against the reeds. So, the plan was to feed a single ball of groundbait down the middle and gauge the response. The longer line would be loose-fed with casters and maggots. I expected to catch roach and rudd off this line and I wasn’t disappointed. I starting catching rudd right from the whistle, which included a nice 4-6 ouncer every now and then just to keep it interesting.

After about an hour I decided to try down the middle over the groundbait with maggot on the hook. I only picked up few small roach so I cupped in another ball of groundbait and went back over the far side to continue catching steadily. I could see Alan Maggs on the next peg fishing the whip and he was matching me fish for fish. So, halfway through the match now and time for another look down the middle. This time I put half a dendrobena on the hook, with the intention of tempting a large perch. There was a slight tow on the canal and so I was lifting and dropping the bait trying to entice a bite. The float disappeared, I struck and I was into something a bit hefty. Not sure what it was. Could have been a trench or could have been a big perch. It just ran into a weed bed and I lost to after piling on the pressure.

Now, as you no doubt know, when that happens, it sticks in your mind and you keep thinking there might be another one there. So every 20-30 minutes I had to take another quick look but I didn’t get any more surprises. I had caught steadily all day from the long line with lots of small roach and rudd to keep me busy and so I was relative;y happy with that. At the all-out, I walked to the end peg to see what the other lads had caught. There were some really big perch caught. Kev Murch had 3 of them and some bits for over 5lb, one perch must have been close to 2lb and then there was an odd perch for each of the other lads.

I was next to weigh and put 6-10-0 on the scales. Ace matchman Jason had only 4-5-0 and he was the one I thought might win. However, Alan who had been emulating Mr Whippy all day did very well to emerge as eventual winner with 7-7-0 of roach, rudd, perch and skimmers. So, a second place for me and overall it was a very enjoyable day. My rig was 0.2gm pencil float, 0.15 main line, 0.11 hooklength to a size 18 Guru microbarb. I’m not sure that we will coming back to this venue due to a lack of interest, which is a shame.
