Welcome to my fishing blog… August 2022

August 28th – Bert Elsom Memorial Match, Whitehouse Farm

This match was held on George’s Lake. I used to really like this lake before the carp were put in. You were always able to catch a good bag of tench in the summer or some big rudd. Come late summer and some chunky roach would show up to hemp and tares. The winter was always good for some bream to 4lb plus but all that has changed now. With the addition of carp and F1s, this is now a very different lake. Some of the carp go to 24lb or more so you need some serious kit to get them out. There are also some really good productive pegs and some very poor ones, including pegs 2 and 5.

So we had 14 turn up for this one and as usual, the talk was all about what peg would likely win, with pegs 1, 6, 11 and 16 being the current favourites. At 8am, we had the draw and I just had a bad feeling today, which proved to be well justified. I pulled out peg 2. I’ve drawn this peg 3 times now and never done any good on it so I wasn’t hopeful. There is one feature on this peg, which is a small bush to the right-hand side and if the fish are not there then a struggle is virtually guaranteed.  For some reason, the fish won’t come close in and so can’t get them down the edge like you can from other pegs. Anyway here’s how it went for me…

I decided to try a long line today, so the plan was to fish at 16 metres on the deck, up in the water just off the edge of the bush, and a short line at 6 metres right in front. At the all-in I cupped in some chopped worm and caster on the long line to see what might turn up. I also cupped in a small ball of F1 green sweet groundbait laced with dead reds and casters on the 6-metre line. The plan was to then constantly loose-feed the swim off the edge of the bush with caster and maggot. I was really counting on silvers today from all swims.

I started on the 6-metre line and after 10 minutes I had a small roach, quickly followed by 3 more. Then a nice skimmer of about a pound showed up. After that, I couldn’t get a bite on this line. So next I went out on the 16-metre line with a small piece of worm on the hook. Nothing was interested so I changed to caster. This brought an instant response from a small roach but nothing else after that. My final option was the “up-in-the-water” line just off the overhanging bush, which I had been feeding steadily all day with a few maggots and casters.

On the first put-in I had a nice rudd of about 8oz followed by a steady stream of roach and rudd for the remainder of the day but I was never going to catch up with Kevin Swanston on my left, who had a netful of carp and F1s. I finished up with about 6lb, which was to be expected off this peg. All in all, a non-event for me and so an early bath beckoned. There’s always next time.
